LNER 4-6-0 B17/4 Footballer Class – 1936/37
The B17/4's were the last of the Sandringham class to be built. They started their working life on the Great Central section of the LNER so did not have to comply with the severe length restrictions imposed by the turntables of the old Great Eastern area which had required the earlier Sandringham's to be attached to short Great Eastern style tenders. This meant that they could have LNER standard 4,200 gallon tenders.
The naming of this subclass also differed from the rest, taking the names of Association Football Clubs in the LNER area, instead of English country houses.
They were used on express passenger services, taking over from old less powerful locomotives. After the length restrictions were removed they were transferred to the East Anglia area, where they served until withdrawn.
On withdrawal one of the nameplates was usually presented to the football club concerned, some have been sold-on by struggling clubs to raise much needed money.
Print Run and Size
Just 100 prints of each club has been produced. This series of Limited Edition prints is slightly different to the rest as it has been produced to a scale of 6mm/ft, but the level of detail is the same!
