The Princess Coronation class were designed while William A. Stanier was Chief Mechanical Engineer, but by the time the last two were produced H.G. Ivatt was in charge and he made several changes to the design. These included roller bearings throughout, revised screw reverser, new hopper ashpan, a delta trailing truck and redesigned rear frames.
The first of the these two, No. 6256, was named in honour of Sir William Stanier, who had been knighted in 1943. The original cast delta truck was not a success and was replaced with a welded version. Although the locomotive was a favourite with enthusiasts it was not preserved. 46256 is shown as running in 1963.
