The class were designed to William A. Stanier’s brief, while he was in India, by his very able team of: Tom Coleman (Chief Draftsman), Robert Riddles (Stanier’s Personal Assistant) and Roland Bond (Crewe Works Manager). The first of the class appeared in streamlined form to haul the new ‘Coronation Scot’ and other heavy express passenger services on the West Coast route to Scotland.
In 1938 it was decided to build five of the class in standard form, of which Duchess of Sutherland was one. On withdrawal 6233 was preserved and is now owned and operated on the main line by the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust. It is portrayed as running in 1947.
