Designed to William A. Stanier’s brief, while he was in India, the first streamliners appeared in 1937. Duchess of Hamilton was the last of the second batch built and was chosen to represent the LMS at the 1939 New York World Fair, changing identities with No. 6220 Coronation.
Before the exhibition it toured the North Eastern United States, hauling a matching set of Coronation Scot coaches. Due to the outbreak of the Second World War it did to return until February 1942. In April 1943, while undergoing a general overhaul, it regained its original identity. At this time it was fitted with a twin blast pipe and double chimney, which is the condition shown.
