London Brighton & South Coast
0-6-0 'A1' Class
No. 55 Stepney
Designed by W. Stroudley

The A1 class entered service in 1872 working the South London suburban services of the LBSCR. This included working over the East London Line so some of the class were named after places in East London.

The origin of the nickname ’Terriers’ has never been successfully established. One idea is that they got their name because like the dogs they went ‘down holes’ (the tunnel under the Thames of the East London line), or, again like terriers, they seemed to bustled about.

Because the class still had a role to play they were rebuilt with new boilers from 1911, these were reclassified as A1X. Many survived to the end of steam and 10 are preserved.

The illustration shows Stepney (preserved on the Bluebell Railway) in original A1 condition complete with wooden brake blocks. Prints of this were produced and sold to raise funds for the railway.
