No. 21C1 Channel Packet – 1946

The Merchant Navy pacifics were designed by O.V.S. Bulleid to work the express passenger trains of the Southern Railway. The class was built with air-smoothed casing and chain driven valve gear enclosed in an oil bath. 21C1 Channel Packet was the first to be built and was attached to a matching 5,000 gallon tender.

The original design had problems with smoke clearance, so experiments were carried out on later members of the class. This resulted in the class being fitting with a cowling above the smokebox and smoke deflectors. Channel Packet is shown as running in 1946, painted in gloss malachite green and fitted with intermediate pressed-out smoke deflectors.

Built: Eastleigh, February 1941

Named: 10th March 1941

Rebuilt: Eastleigh, August 1959
