Brief history of the locomotive |
London & North Eastern Railway
2-8-2 'P2/1' Class
No. 2001 Cock o' the North
Designed by H.N. Gresley
The P2s were designed by H.N. Gresley to eliminate the double heading of express passenger services over the heavy gradients of the Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line. Cock o' the North was built with Lentz rotary cam poppet valves, ACFI feedwater heater and Kylchap double blastpipe and chimney.
Although the locomotive showed promise the money was not available to develop the valve gear, so it was decided to convert it to Gresleys conjugated Walschaerts gear.
The print shows Cock o' the North as originally built with rotary cam poppet valves and in the condition that it was put to work on the main line between Edinburgh and Aberdeen, Scotland. |
