The A4 class pacifics were designed by Nigel Gresley to haul the LNER’s high speed services. No.4486 Merlin was one of the second batch built, which were named after birds, and was sent to Edinburgh’s Haymarket shed. It was later renumbered 588 and subsequently 27.
In May 1946 plaques depicting the badge of HMS Merlin, the Royal Naval Air Station at Donibristle, Fife, Scotland, were attached to the cab side, they were moved to the boiler sides in 1948. Merlin was a regular on the non-stop services between London and Edinburgh and became known as ‘magnificent Merlin’ by enthusiasts. It is show in 1951 condition when painted in British Railways 8P blue livery.
