6220 Coronation

Coronation is shown in the condition that it made its record speed run in 1937 after which the LMS claimed it had reached a peak of 114mph approaching Crewe. It was painted in Caledonian blue with silver stripes edged in dark blue. The cylinders had by-pass valves and a Stone-Deuta speed indicator was fitted.

The fact I have completed it in the 50th anniversary year of the Queens Coronation is just a happy coincidence (I started getting information for the illustration in the 80's). The locomotive was named to celebrate her father's (King George VI) Coronation in 1937.

6225 Duchess of Gloucester

Duchess of Gloucester was the first of the 1938 batch and is shown in the condition it entered service. This was the first streamliner to be painted in standard LMS crimson lake with gold lines edged in black with a thin vermillion line between.

This batch were fitted with standard cylinder steam-cocks with the casing around the cylinders modified to suit. The ashpan was modified and had bottom hopper doors. They were fitted with a British Thomson Houston speed indicator and a streamlined coping was attached to the top of the tender.
