Designed by William A. Stanier to haul the new ‘Coronation Scot’ and other heavy express passenger services. The detail design work was carried out by Tom Coleman (Chief Draftsman), Robert Riddles (Stanier’s Personal Assistant) and Roland Bond (Crewe Works Manager).
The LMS claimed the British railway speed record when they announced that No.6220 Coronation had reached a maximum of 114 mph on the descent of Madeley Bank while hauling the special press train on 29th June 1937 with driver T.J. Clarke and fireman C. Lewis on the footplate.
